The Maria Theresa Thaler is probably one of the most famous and well known coins of the world.

Originally struck in Austria from 1740 to 1780, the Thaler was the currency of the Austrian Empire. It was very important for trade with the Levant (parts of Turkey, Lebanon, Syria). Over time, the Maria Theresa Thaler became the best known and most popular silver coin in the Arabian world. After the death of Empress Maria Theresa in 1780, Joseph II permitted the Austrian mint to continue striking the coin with the 1780 dies in order to meet demand from the Middle East. The 1780 taler was the only silver coin that the Arabs trusted and would accept. Since then, the Maria Theresa Thaler has been restruck for trade purposes at Vienna, Austria with the 1780 date frozen in time. The taler became the unofficial currency in some areas of Africa and Asia, and may still be in use today as a "trade silver dollar" in some Arabian bazaars.

Particularly on older strikes earlier than about 1850, almost each individual coin shows minor differences. Such differences help specialists to determine the origin and strike date of individual specimen. A close examination of more than 20 coins struck in Venice between 1817 and 1833 showed that nearly all coins were struck from different dies. Major characteristics of common variants are described in the List of variants.

Various articles claim that the Maria Theresa Thaler was re-struck with an unchanged appearance since 1780. However, this is only really true for restrikes made after about 1850. Earlier strikes are usually relatively easy to identify and classify. Unfortunately, the statement may cause collectors - and sometimes dealers - to believe that their coins might be original coins struck in 1780 or shortly thereafter. Sometimes such coins will actually be sold as "original strike". In reality, most of those "originals" will be post-1850 strikes.

In Original and Restrike we compare two coins struck in 1780 (Vienna mint) and a coin struck around 1781 (Guenzburg mint) with a modern restrike. This may help to identify the differences.

The Talers provides a list of major variants. This list is not complete and is being extended on an ongoing basis. There are somewhere between 100 and 150 major variants, and an uncountable number of strikes with minor differences.

Hello caitlin,

In fact: all the information is on the coin: this is a coin of 10 sen, issued by the kingdom of Malaysia (100 sen = 1 ringgit). Depicted is the parliament building.
Unfortunately, your coin is not struck in silver, but in a copper-nickel alloy, which is silvery in color.
This type was issued from 1967 until 1988. Mintage for 1977 is 52,700,000 .
Catalog values in the Standard Catalog of World Coins are, according to its condition:
very fine: 0.10$ / extremely fine: 0.30$/ uncirculated: 0.75$

Hello all, I am new to this board but I am hoping you can help me out. I have been collecting US coins for a number of years now but I am not familiar with foreign coins at all. My grandfather left me a number of old coins and I have identified most of them. I need your assistance with a few that are very faded and do not have dates. I do not have pictures at this time but I will post as accurate descriptions as I can.

#1.) A small coin, smaller in size than a dime. Features a bust of a man/woman facing to the right with short style hair close to the head. Reverse features 2 standing figures with a pole or lamp in between them. The figures on the referse look egyptian. I cannot make out any writing on this coin. If anyone has an idea I would greatly appreciate it.

#2.) A very thin coin, in size close to a quarter. The reverse features a standing man facing to the left. He is holding a chalice or lamp in his right hand, in his left appears to be a spear which crosses in front of his body. The obverse is the bust of a person facing to the right wearing what looks like a crown with 5 spikes protruding from the top (resembles lady liberty). There are words along the edge on both sides that I cannot make out and they do not appear to be english. No visible date on this coin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

PS,
Thank you for commenting. I wanted to note that some of these things (like the list of countries using each type of currency and a list of some devices on coins) exists in SCWC, but not all of the suggestions that I had (especially, the legend searching) and the fact that it is not online is an impediment too.

I know of one website where someone has started entering information about coins and allows everyone else to enter additional coins, but he has so few coins in his database, that it is practically useless for this purpose, even though it is a great idea. For many countries he has only one or no coins. Perhaps if everyone got together and entered the coins from his own country, for example, just to get him started, this might go somewhere.

Any other ideas or comments?

Group,
For ancient coins, there are many online databases that allow you to look up the inscriptions and devices on the coins as well as any other data about the coins (the metal, often the size and weight, denomination, etc.). Does anyone know of an online resource for World coins that does the same?

For example, if you cannot make out all of the features or letters in the inscription on a coin, you should be able to type in what you have into an online database and search and the work your way through the results. So you should be able to search on the word "crocodial", for instance, and it might give you as one of the results, The Gambia, KM#29. Anyone?

Thanks,

Hi Daniel,

To solve this problem, you have to know that on Spanish coins between 1868 and 1982, you'll find 2 dates: date of authorisation and date of issue. The larger date is the year of authorization, while the year of issue is incused on 1 or 2 small stars.

In case of your 1 peseta coin 1947 is the date of authorization. You'll find the date of issue depicted in the stars before and after "UNA", but you'll have to use a magnifier.
Same situation with your 5 pesetas KM#787: 1957 is the year of authorization, the year of issue is situated in the small star left from the eagle.

Group,

I have what will probably seem to many as a silly question, but I have run into it a few times now. I am not sure how to read something in the Standard Catalog of World Coins.

Take for example, Spain Km775, 1 Peseta 1947 or Spain Km787, 25 Pesetas,1957. I have examples of each of these in what many might call XF condition. But in SCWC there are several entries for each of these coins, with values ranging from 30 cents to $40 (US).

For example, for KM787, there are about 20 entries including a 1957(BA) that is worth $40, and a 1957(70) that is worth 30 cents. I can't find a "BA" or "70" on the coin. What do those codes mean?

Thank you,
-Daniel

You have 2 coins from north Africa.

Your first coin is Algeria 50 centimes KM#102.
Your second coin seems to be Morocco (hence the crown: Morocco is a kingdom) 10 santimat Y#60.

Group,
I am having difficulty identifying two Islamic coins that I have. They both appear to be brass. There is Arabic on each of these coins in various locations.

One of them is 24mm, has the denomination 50 and the date 1971 on one side. On the other side it has some lab equipement, including a beaker, a book and a compass.

The other coin is 20mm, has the denomination of 10 and the date 1974 / AH1394 on one side. On that same side, it has a picture of the sun and perhaps another star and some rays. On the other side it has a coat of arms that looks similar to ones from India or Somalia - in the center is a 5 pointed star and on the side are lions - the one on the right facing. On the top is a crown, and perhaps a banner on the bottom (too small for me to see clearly).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
-Daniel

Oh, Michael, we can work on your 5 piastre coin next, but I would imagine that it is a KM94, minted in 1962 (AH1382), also in aluminum-bronze. Remember - their 2 looks like a backward 7 to us. That one is also worth about a dime in VF condition.

Michael,
Terrific! I always consider it to be the best outcome when I help someone attribute his coins for himself. It is a good skill to learn.

Only problem is that there are 3 varieties of the 10 piastre coin (there is a fourth, but that one is brass, so I don't think you have that one) and none of the varieties have the dates that you describe. The varieties (all struck in aluminum-bronze) are:

(From the United Arab Republic, 1958-1961),
KM92 minted in 1960 (AH1380).

(Syrian Arab Republic, 1961-)
KM95 minted in 1962 (AH1382) and 1965 (AH1385).
KM106 minted in 1974 (AH1394)

Yours would have to be one of those 3.

Keep in mind that the Arabic number for 6 looks a lot like our number 7. The Arabic 2 looks similar to a backward 7 and their 4 looks like a backward 3 (and a 5 looks like a zero - I know, this is all so confusing). It's strange when you think that the Arabs gave us our numbering system (what we today call Arabic numerals instead of Roman numerals). I could email you a conversion chart if you like. Take another look at the dates and see if you can fit them into what I described.

By the way, these coins are all worth about 10 cents (US) in VF condition, so this is clearly just for the academic experience and the fun of the hobby.

Daniel,

Thanks a lot for your help.

The coins are definately both 10 piastres coins from Syria. After translating the Arabic numbers on the coins, I can say the first coin is a 10 Piastres coin, year 1967. The second coin is a also 10 Piastres coin, year 1972.

(I also found a 5 piastres coin (1967) in my collection)

thanks,
